Calcium reacted with every metal ions solution it was placed in. This expectation was observed, as copper did not react with anything. It was expected that the element at the bottom of the activity series would not react with any of the other metals. This means that calcium is more likely to give up its electrons than tin. As shown above, the metals, in order of ease of reactivity, are calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, tin, then copper. The main outcome from this experiment was the creation of an activity series. Table 3: Activity Series created by observations from experiment Calcium *Ex indicates that the reaction was not observed, but it was expected to occur slowly Table 2: Reactions of solid metals with solutions of metal ions with observations Table 1: Metal reactions with HCl acid with observations and net ionic equations. The metals from Table 2 were compared to each other in order to create an activity series. For example, gas formations, bubbles, fizzy, or color change. Data from Table 2 was collected by obtaining a solution of metal ions and dropping in a piece of metal. In some combinations, a reaction occurred, and in other combinations, a reaction did not occur. It was recorded if a reaction occurred or not, so that an activity series could be created.ĭata from Table 1 was collected by obtaining HCl and dropping in a piece of metal, then observing what happens. In this experiment, different metals were tested for their reactivity. The activity series can be used to predict products of reactions, and to predict if a reaction will even occur. Metals higher on the activity series are more likely to reacts relative to those lower on the activity series. When an atom gains electrons, it is reduced. Nonmetals will accept electrons to become negatively charged ions, called anions. When an atom loses its electrons, it is oxidized. Metals will give up electrons to become positively charged ions, called cations. The activity series is a list of the metals in order of ease of reaction, or the ability of the element to give up electrons. Reactions may or may not occur between two elements based on the activity series. Calcium was the most easily oxidized, while copper was least reactive. Solid metal was placed in a metal ion solution to determine if a reaction would occur. The purpose of this lab was to test the reactivity of certain metals, then create an activity series demonstrating the metals’ tendencies to be oxidized. This particular lab report demonstrates my ability to perform qualitative analysis, and to think critically about the data to form a logical conclusion. The assignment was to create a formal lab report that expresses data and observations, lab procedure, and a discussion of the data that leads to a conclusion. This is a lab report for my General Chemistry class.
